Dental sedation is an effective way to help patients feel at ease during treatment, whether they experience anxiety or require support for lengthy or complex procedures. It ensures a more comfortable experience while allowing patients to choose the best treatment options without being restricted to simple or emergency care.

Sedation is often described as ‘aware but don’t care’—you will feel deeply relaxed while remaining responsive to instructions from your dentist. Unlike general anaesthesia, IV sedation does not render you unconscious. Instead, it creates a state of calm and deep relaxation, often resulting in partial or complete memory loss of the procedure. Many patients feel as though they have slept through their treatment.

    How does dental sedation work?

    • A small cannula is placed in a vein in your arm or hand
    • A sedative drug is administered intravenously, helping you feel calm, relaxed and sleepy
    • The sedative is ‘topped up’ throughout the procedure to maintain its effect
    • A monitor tracks your heart rate, oxygen levels and blood pressure before, during and after treatment to ensure safety.

    Additional Benefits

IV sedation can also be highly effective in eliminating a hyperactive gag reflex, which can otherwise limit treatment options. This allows for greater precision and comfort during lengthy procedures such as root canal therapy and dental implant surgery.

        Preparing for dental sedation

Before treatment, we’ll arrange a consultation to assess your suitability and answer any questions.

On the day of your sedation appointment:

        • Take any prescribed medication at the usual time
        • Have only light meals and non-alcoholic drinks, avoiding food for two hours before treatment
        • Bring a responsible adult with you – they must be over 18, able-bodied, and someone you personally know. They’ll need to remain in the clinic and escort you home, ensuring you’re cared for post-treatment

Your escort will be provided with all necessary aftercare instructions to support your recovery.
