What causes the skin to age?

The younger you look, the better you feel about yourself. But age is an unstoppable process and, as the body ages, the appearance and characteristics of our skin change. Age, hormones, sun exposure, smoking all have part to play, causing fine lines and wrinkles. Skin feels more fragile and less elastic. As our age increases, the hyaluronic acid (HA) content of our skin - which is so important for water retention - decreases. The oil-producing (sebaceous) glands become less active, and your skin becomes drier. The skin also loses fat, so it looks less plump and smooth and it also loses its youthful colour and glow. While all these changes are taking place, gravity is also at work, pulling at the skin, causing it to sag.

There are two major components of facial ageing:

    * Dynamic lines, which are due to muscular hyperactivity.
    * Static lines, which are due to volume loss.

Treating both of these main components of facial ageing leads to natural, balanced and refined outcomes:
Botulinum Toxin relaxes hyperactive muscles and therefore treats dynamic facial lines.
Juvederm® ULTRA - a HA filler range - replaces lost volume and treats static facial lines by replenishing the natural hyaluronic.

Botox diminishes un-wanted wrinkles and frown lines that appear across the forehead, and the corners of the eyes. Years of making facial expressions cause permanent creases in the skin. That's where Botox comes into it's own, and injected into the affected area, it temporarily paralyses the muscles so you can make these creases disappear.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of moderate-to-severe frown lines between the brows in people 18 to 65 years of age for a short period of time (temporary).

BOTOX® Cosmetic is administered by a healthcare professional as a simple, nonsurgical treatment that is injected directly into the muscles between the brows. It works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity that causes moderate to severe lines to form between the brows.

Juvederm Ultra at The Smile Spa StocktonDermal Fillers

Non-surgical aesthetic treatments are becoming more and more popular because they are quicker, less painful and more subtle than plastic surgery. That’s why the Juvéderm® ULTRA range of injectable gels, provide a simple, fast answer. It’s an exciting new category of dermal fillers based on hyaluronic acid – a substance that occurs naturally in the body. This means it not only fills wrinkles but also replaces what the skin has lost over time.

Dermal fillers are injected to remove wrinkles and folds, to re-plump cheeks and to firm facial contours. Dermal fillers are good to treat frown lines, nasolabial folds (from nose to mouth) and smoker's lines around the mouth. Fillers are derived from hyaluronic acid and treatment takes between 30 minutes to one hour. These treatments last from six months to one year.

We also use fillers for lips and to enhance cheeks. Juvederm / Radiesse treatment starts from £210

Genuine Dermaroller™ Therapy™ Procedure

A Genuine Dermaroller™ medical device is used  to produce thousands of micro-medical needle-columns in the skin. Each column will penetrate into the dermis of the skin and will be approximately 0.1mm in width. The column will close rapidly enabling the skin to recover quickly - often in the same day. A topical anaesthetic is used to numb the skin making the procedure comfortable; it will normally take up to 30 minutes for the topical anaesthetic to work and 20 - 30 minutes for the Genuine Dermaroller™ Therapy procedure.

After a Genuine Dermaroller™ Therapy™ procedure your body will start to naturally regenerate and repair the skin, working below the surface in the dermis. This takes time as new collagen is formed, new skin cells are generated and blood supply is enhanced. It can take up to 6 weeks before visible signs of regeneration and repair are seen and the process will continue over the following months, providing you with a natural and long lasting enhancement.

It is recommended that your Genuine Dermaroller™ Therapy™ consists of a series of three Genuine Dermaroller™ procedures with approximately 6 weeks between them.

In the treatment of acne scars and other types of scarring it may be necessary to extend your Genuine Dermaroller™ Therapy™, carrying out up to five procedures.

Before and after Genuine Dermaroller™ Therapy™. The area stained purple in the skin biopsy taken after a Genuine Dermaroller™ procedure is newly formed collagen.

Dermaroller costs  £250 per treatment
