Fundraising for a cure

We were delighted to be asked by Smile Spa patient Dr Triece Turnbull, to help rasie funds for a very worthy charity.

Dr Turnbull, told us of a friend of a friend who has an amazing story of strength and determination against all odds:

Dave Massam a married father of two young boys, was initially diagnosed with kidney cancer in September 2008 after going to the doctors feeling very tired. Within two weeks the left organ was removed at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

The family suffered a further blow in January 2009 when a follow-up scan showed it had spread and there were four tumours on Dave’s lungs. It was then that Dave was told the cancer was terminal.

Cancer-fighting treatments had failed, but just as it seemed there was no hope, the 42-year-old discovered a drug that could save his life.

He and his wife Lynne, secured treatment at Christy hospital in Manchester and amazingly, just over a year after starting treatment, all of his tumours were “dead”.

When Dr Turnbull told The Smile Spa of Dave’s story and The Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge – hiking up 3 mountains and covering 25 miles, on 7thJuly to raise £5,000 for The Christie Hospital, Manchester, which is one of the leading cancer hospitals worldwide and also where Dave received his life saving treatment, we wanted to help. Lynne and Dr Turnbull will be joined by 10 other committed fundraisers, including the couple’s eldest child and nephews.

We really would appreciate your help in achieving this target and encouraging others to donate too by visiting

We would like to wish Dave, Lynne and Dr Turnbull the very best in their 3 Peaks challenge.
